“Alligator!” She started running over towards the fence.

A million terrible possibilities flew through Naomi’s mind in merely a second. Her eyes went wide as she screamed and lunged forward. “No! Amira, no!” She hit the sidewalk hard as she fell, lunging for the girl.

Scrambling to her feet, she felt blood drip down her hands and knees as she ran toward her daughter.

“Amira!” But the little girl paid no mind.

Diving down to reach for her hand, she caught it this time, and looked around as fast as she could for anything resembling a scale. Some of the bark was on the ground, so she knew someone had used the tree, but she couldn’t see anything.

Then, there it was! Something gray in among the shreds of bark and leaves on the ground. She reached in and picked it up, along with a little rock. There was no time to do anything but shove them in her pockets and pull Amira up the hill, scolding her gently, hoping the little one would at least understand the tones of worry and fear in her voice.

Her heart was pounding in her chest, and her breathing was ragged. The world rushed around her in slow motion.

Her breathing slowed as she looked down at her safe little girl, then around, realizing that nobody seemed to care about what she’d done. I won’t be thrown out for screaming or going too close. Good.

She slowly let the tension out of her shoulders, and they started walking once more. She pulled the paper out of her satchel, and the vial of glitter. Blowing the sparkles onto the paper, she let Amira watch as the glitter formed into a flowing script. The little one squealed and clapped, but was easily distracted by the monkeys swinging around in the cages beside them.

As she admired the mammals, Naomi showed the next line to Ram. “Look. I think we’re done after this one; there’s a period there.”

He nodded, raising his eyebrows. “Seems like Morgan underestimated us, huh? Let’s see… No, wait. That’s just a piece of glitter, isn’t it? Because a period there doesn’t really make too much sense, to be honest. It’s not a sentence.”

“This from the one who said ‘where is us’ earlier.”

Dion shook his head and made an incredulous face. “And who cares?! It’s poetry. Poetry never makes sense.”

Naomi brushed it, and it wasn’t either thing. It was a piece of bark from her hands that had blown onto the paper. “Well, I still think we should be done after this one because it’s a quatrain now, and that’s kinda final, right?”

“We’ll go with that.” Ram said. He looked down at Amira, who was now gawking at the lion. “And I think we can think about the next creature to find while we’re here—”

Naomi smirked and raised her eyebrow. “Oh? But I thought we were supposed to be going quicker? Solving more clues?”

He stuttered, knowing that she knew about his weakness to the little one’s dimples. “Well you know what?! Maybe we can find the animal here or something.
